Art Discussion
« on: April 17, 2013, 10:17:26 AM »
Hey guys, I thought I'd start a thread to talk about art - could be general stuff or more specifically about games.

I'll kick it off by saying that I think the newer class designs have turned out much stronger than the original set, so I may go back and do some tune up on the Rogue to bring the style and design up to the level of say the Bard. This is partly just the process of becoming more in tune with (and faster/better at) the style one is trying to go for the longer you work on it. Happens all the time in comics especially.

Thoughts?

I really like the way the Rouge looks, not too messy, yet still has some interesting design elements.  That said, it doesn't fit particularly well with the new classes, especially the Huntsman, who has a hood as well.  So, it could use a bit of touching up.

The new design seem more detail heavy on top. Maybe work the Rogues arrow out a bit more and give the Socerer's paper cards some kind of motif?

Speaking of art, Ryan, have you done any environment concept art that you will be showing at some point? I am not talking about objects, just some cool art that gives a glimpse at some of the areas we will be traversing.

I guess something similar to this is what I am asking for:

I don't think any class will ever come close to the Bard's level of fabulosity.  I do agree with Doomspeaker that the cards on the Sorcerer's hat could use some detailing for that extra bit of pazazz.  As for the Rogue, the eye patch and arrow stick out as being sort of flat when compared to the rest of the outfit.

She's quite a pimp. ^^

Ryan, in your first kickstater video ever, there were some designs for the Templar that looked like a full helmet (or faceplate) with six holes in it. While the final templar design is way better for a playable character, this "face-holes" design evoked some feeling of cold-iron, perfectly fit for something like a ghost armor.

I think the new classes look amazing!  I didn't really notice that they were a bit more detailed than the original classes until you pointed it out.  :P As a few other mentioned maybe just fine tune the heads/hats a bit more.  Give the rouge's arrow a little more detail, as well as the cards in the Sorcerer's cap. Maybe make them look a bit more three dimensional.  Just my two cents! Looking great though, guys!

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! This is actually giving me a bit of good perspective - I've looked at the Rogue for so long now that it's harder than it should be to think of what should be freshened up. All good ideas.

This is actually my next task, right after the remaining 2 characters are painted. Will show some images off in the next 1-2 weeks!

I don't think the Templar ever had a full faceplate, though it might have looked like it in a pencil drawing or something. I've been trying to avoid any full mask-style faces just for design consistency, though over time I started wanting to do some more interesting faces and ended up doing the partial mask for the Elementalist. Anyway, I guess that was a tangent......

I did the slots for the templar's "ventail" (had to look up what that was called) rather than the 6 holes because I thought that looked cooler on the Assassin. But I do agree that it would be cool to have some ghost armor that looks like the Templar, with a full face visor. Will definitely think about doing that! We do want to have some ghost armor style enemies, though I haven't worked on them yet.

I love the design of the bard.

Yet I would prefer black, red and gold as her main colors.
I know that those are the colors of the German flag and yes I am German...and most famous bards were from Germany...but those colors really work fabulously together.
Just look at these pictures (all were made especially for me or made by me):

Also I would replace the dove (a bird with a horrid singing voice) with a crow (or a songbird), but this is only my personal preference.

Sorry it was a silhouette not a fully fledged design. The ventail looks better for a more  "knightly" design. Talking about ghosts: I just noticed that the Ghost in the demo have tears running down their ghostly cheeks. Very detailed!

Art Discussion? Alrighty.

The World of the Drop

I can't say how much I love this picture. Seriously, if the resolution were wide enough, even just adding sky, crags and swamp surrounding the Cornus Spire in the center of the picture, this would be my desktop for the next forever and a half.

Everything about it, the silhouette, the ominous clouds, the murky lighting, it's so foreboding, yet so alluring. In a way it kind of reminds me of the Forsaken Fortress from Wind Waker. I also like how the top of the spire vaguely looks like a vertical conch shell, makes me wonder what the architecture of the topmost section of the spire is like? Maybe some sort of mountain-top Atlantis.

If there were some sort of stage select feature to the Campaign when dropping a new Delver, formatted sort of like the level map of Castlevania, sectioning off the different architecture types of each new area, I think it'd look pretty damn cool.

The only thing i think would need to be changed would be the head shape from the new designs the head has more defined edges and is less spherical than the the designs for the original classes color is a bit  drab for the rogue but  it gives it character which i like so i wouldn't say much needs to change.

I'm gonna have to disagree. The Bard is supposed to be over the top fabulously fancy and the dove/colors fit that quite nicely. I mean, the fact there's a bird just chillin' on his/her hat is cray cray enough, but it being a dove just takes it to the next level.
