How to take high speed photography?

i have a school project were i have to take high speed photography... i turned th dial to manual and set the shutter speed to 1/4000.... i set the iso to 1600 and whatever F is to F5.6. when i set the camera to the shutter speed of 1/4000 the exposure went to -2... i dont know how to put it back to 0 but when i take pics its very dark... what to do please soeone help. thank you. by the way project is due tomorrow
