MMOs you play/played
« on: April 24, 2013, 07:55:39 AM »
In gaming, MMOs really set the standard for many different aspects of gaming. Lore, skills, explorability, worldbuilding, replayability, crafting, social integration, etc.

What MMOs have you played in the past and why did you like them or not like them?  Are you playing any MMOs now?

I have played many MMO's in the past, starting with Ultima Online.  proceeding through WoW and now i'm on swtor.  I play them mostly for the ability to game with my friends and family.  the Lore is interesting but i find myself speeding through it on every toon after the first. the replay-ability with lore involvement is not necessary for me to enjoy a game.

Let's see...

Ultima Online
Everquest
Asherons Call
Anarchy Online-Beta'd
Dark Age of Camelot- Beta'd
Planetside
Final Fantasy 11
Ragnarock Online
Star Wars Galaxies
Everquest 2
World of Warcraft
Star Wars: The Old Republic

Social gaming, gaming as a hobby and just liking the model of the games themselves.

Unfortunately I've never been able to stick with any MMO for any extended amount of time. I just lose interest. Probably the longest I ever got into an MMO was Dungeon Fighter Online, it wasn't really that great, but it least felt like I had a little more control over the combat than your average MMO combat system. I hear a lot about Guild Wars 2 having really good, fluid combat, and I made a character on a friend's account to try it, but I wasn't really impressed at base level.

I know you're not SUPPOSED to be impressed at base level, the real excitement comes with higher level play, but I don't have that sort of time to invest getting to the point where I'll actually enjoy combat. The social aspect is nice, but not enough to keep me in if I'm not enjoying myself on a personal level.

It's weird, my best friend from High School is VERY into WoW, it's one of the only games he plays, (whereas I play a lot of different games in a lot of different genres) and he really likes it. I tried it out with him once through the free trial, got to level 4 after doing 3 quests for about an hour, and thought to myself, "This is really boring, slow, and not fun at all, I'm uninstalling this." and that was my experience with WoW XD

I started out on good ole' Runescape, then went to Ultima Online fr a bit, and thheennnn World of Warcraft.  I stayed with WoW for a good nearly 5 years and quit last year.  I played a few smaller mmo I'm sure here and there, but those are the ones that stick.

You know a MMO that was highly unappreciated and had great quality in my opinion, was LoTRO.  Though like the rest of you, I played a whole lot of WoW

Tried WoW once, since I was a huge Warcraft3 fan back then. Quitted after 1 week because I knew I would get addicted to this stuff.
Never touched an MMO since then in order to keep my social life healthy.

I bought the WoW artbook though. It is kind of good if you like blizzards comicy look.

Ya, but that comic looks is part of their success. Almost any computer can play WoW. Gets you out and playing as quick as it can.

RO years ago, public and private servers, mained Assassin Cross/Bard.

Still love the look and sound of it, but I just can't be bothered to time sink like that on an online game these days.

Very wise choice.  I only played WoW during work hours back at a desk job I had....kept my social life intact. :)

I've done:

WoW for 4 years, GW2 for a few months, LotRO for a few months, SWTOR for the beta, EVE for their 14-day trial (twice), D&D Online for a weekend.

WoW still has been the best experience I've had; I started just after the last content patch for Vanilla. However, there's never been a game I've *wanted* to love as badly as EVE, but its whole automated control scheme, convoluted UI, and odd intro quest structure put me off of it a bit. That said, I've got friends who play and I wouldn't mind taking another run at it. LotRO and SWTOR are essentially one-and-the-same, and D&DO made so little of on impression that I've basically forgotten everything about it. GW2 gets my vote for most epic world and killer UI / art style (watercolor ftw).

There's a reason why it is called "Space-Excel". The learning curve of EVE is just ungodly.

I totally forgot about DDO...I beta'd it and never looked back when I was done for it over a weekend. Really want to try out GW2 though, looks great.
