Bosses, what do you expect to see?
« on: April 17, 2013, 04:44:22 PM »
We have all seen the stone boss from the videos and i am assuming in the PAX demos you guys got to fight him. From what you have seen or fought what kind of bosses do you expect to face?

Well according the story:
Quote
At the end of each zone, the ancient core of the dungeon blocks the Delvers’ passage with a Chamber Guardian. Manifestations of the living dungeon core, they are room-sized beings animated by magic and ancient mechanisms. These bosses cannot truly be defeated, only temporarily deactivated to allow passage... so even if one Delver succeeds, another may have to brave the Guardian Chamber once more.
So I imagine huge creatures that are part of the environment or natural enemies of that particular zone.  Should be interesting!  I believe there will also be mini bosses as well!

Sounds like the bosses will be climbable which would could be lots of fun!

I didn't get past room 11 at the PAX East demo (I only gave two quick attempts before giving up the controller, wish I had stayed longer to be honest but I didn't want to hold up the line  :-[), but I think it was just the Endless Drop mode; so I didn't run into the stone golem. Still, based on the descriptions of bosses I'm actually hoping we see a lot of bosses even larger than him. When I heard room-filling, I was thinking bosses that literally encompassed the room, maybe a worm boss that would dive in and out of the arena and dig behind the walls of the area, or a giant wall face with hands, crazy intimidating stuff like that. It would also be cool to have elevator sections like in beat em ups where you have to survive enemies falling down onto the descending platform for a certain amount of time until reaching your destination; that would be especially interesting for a boss fight. Maybe the platform could actually BE the boss?

I'd also like to see smaller mini-bosses, perhaps a crazed delver lost in the labyrinths of The Drop would attack you (Butcher anybody? :P)

Yeah i pictured a boss that  actually is the room like a boss you climb and the boss battle is on his body or a like you mentioned where the platform is the boss or the wall face with hands.

I believe that this is an effective summary of what we can expect as of right now, given the somewhat limited information that we currently have. It sounds pretty epic in my opinion.

There's got to be a Dragon, I imagine the Stone Golem like thing we've seen is a Mini-Boss or Boss as well. Should be interesting all the same, the enemy design is awesome in this game. Hopefully the bosses will be more puzzle based like Zelda.

We will be slowly rolling out information about some of the bosses, unique zones, etc. over time (although we will keep plenty secret until you play!) but I can take the liberty to clarify one thing: the Stone Golem is not a boss :)

Ahh! Sweet! That's both good to know and rather awesome at the same time! Thanks for answering questions, even if you can't answer a whole lot of them.

Awesome, thanks for this tidbit, Coby!  Looking forward to what y'all have in store for these unique bosses!

That is interesting.  I wonder if there are many creatures that are that level of difficulty that are not the boss.  I have played the endless drop quite a bit and a I think the fireball shooters and the springs are entirely too dangerous, I can't imagine having a bunch of golems running around.

Those seem to equaly powerful at dispatching monsters judging from the demo. There's not reason a golem should be immune to fireballs or get push at least a bit by springs.

The only "inside" boss in a top down game I can think of is Mazzal or Vaati of The Minish Cap, but those where gimmicky.

Oh sorry.  I was referring to the springs that push blocks around and slam you into things.  They can be quite dangerous.  And a room that has fireballs flying every which direction can be even more dangerous.  Unfortunately, I haven't had the opportunity to fight a golem (I don't think they are in the endless drop as I have been through several rooms).

I kinda enjoy the idea of a rival type of mini boss.  Someone you keep running into throughout the game, have a quick spar, then he's off.  Maybe a fellow Dwelver that is trying to get through The Drop first and wants all the glory and gold for himself as well.
