Crowdsourcing Area - Please Contribute!
« on: October 04, 2013, 11:47:40 AM »
Hey, everyone! I started this thread to occasionally bring up topics/questions for which we need suggestions. These could relate to feedback or voting on ideas, suggestions for the game design, names of things in the universe, art feedback... etc. This is open for anyone (with access to this area of the forums) to contribute!

First topic:

I'm trying to come up with a name for a "race" (loosely speaking) in the Delver's universe:

There are areas of the world where Murk poisoning near pure water (Ichor) springs has created poisonous swamps called "Spoils" or "The Spoil." These swamp areas are a confluence of death and decay from the Murk and the life-giving properties of Ichor springs... meaning they are places where the dead may return to life, or things that are non-living may gain sentience.

Several lifeforms come from the Spoil:

Slimes - you know 'em, you love 'em, every game has 'em. Slimes. They are basically just animated swamp-goo, somewhere between ectoplasm and slugs. Almost no intelligence, they just ooze around sucking things up and digesting them.

Monstrosities (or possibly "Abominations") - monsters whose only purpose is consumption. They are completely distinct from other animal-based creatures (mammals, birds, reptiles, insects), but have similar intelligence. Monstrosities have gelatanous skin, and they ooze a like a mild digestive acid - touching them burns and can be poisonous. They consume other beings like a jellyfish, wrapping around them or swallowing them up, and absorb them whole. They usually have one eye and spikes or tentacles.

Gobelkind - the goblins of this world. They grow from the swamp matter organically, and do not reproduce. Their flesh is spongy like a fungus and usually greenish. They form societies and can use weapons and some tools, but have a lower level of intelligence than humans and short lifespans.

This is the one I need a name for (below)!!!!
[Mutants] - A race of humanoid beings that have taken on aspects of other lifeforms that have decomposed in their swamps. It is unclear how they originated, since they obviously derived from a human or humanoid bloodline. They have greenish / bluish / yellowish skin, deep colorful hair, pointy ears, and often some mutated animalistic traits. They are both beautiful and monstrous. Their names will typically be names from common folklore, but re-imagined for the Delver's world as a single race: Bogey, Dwerger, Barghest, Lamia, Succubus/Siren, Mermaid, Harpy, Satyr, Troll, Ogre. Humans hate and fear them, viewing them as abominations. They are often violent to protect themselves, but in general wish to simply be left alone to continue their own culture. They have been known to work with humans at times, but this is rare.

Ideas for the name of this race... please offer suggestions or preferences!!!!
Chimera - overused in games (?)
Mutants - too generic
Demons - sounds too spiritual / evil
Fay / Fairies - too cute and magical
Wights - maybe? Seems too evil / undead
Barghests - literally "barrow ghosts." Kinda cool, but this term specifically refers to a dog-like creature in folklore.
Boggarts - I like this since it (probably) literally means "from the bogs," but the downside is the weird pronounciation "bogg - uhts" (say it with a British accent).
Ghests - I kind of like this too, but it's a weird word and derives from the same root as ghost - "gaest" which I think is Welsh or something, and Geist which is German.
Abomination - too long of a word, or too "ugly" sounding?
Bogeys - just makes me think of targets in an aerial dogfight.
Sirens - maybe? too sexy?
Sprites - Too small-sounding?
Nymphs - slightly too weak? But nicely generic enough.

Oooh...lot of neat info! As for an idea for a name...how about Kelpie? Irish spirit that looks like a horse that drowns innocent passer bys.

Not necessarily "Abomination" but something similar should definitely be used as a derogatory term used by humans, gives an impression of the race's backstory and references their strained relationship with mankind because they used to be human themselves. As for names for races, I'm kind of getting a Jim Henson's Dark Crystal vibe from the genesis of creatures out of the swamp. Also because they brought the various races in that movie to life quite well, and if you need some inspiration for some great designs that are convincing and believable, it's a pretty good place to go looking. You had the elf-like Gelflings, the reptilian Skeksies, everything from the Podlings to the Garthim had really neat designs and were very distinct and memorable both by name and appearance.

So maybe give that movie a watch, research how they came up with names for their creatures if there's anything about why they chose those names, (from a quick search I didn't find much but you may have more luck than I did) and catch some inspiration off of that. My personal initial name idea was something like "The Changed Ones" but that put more of an H.P. Lovecraft image in my head than what I imagined from reading your description of them. They're like hybrid creatures from the bogs... Hybrogs, Bogbrids, Hybogs... I've got nothing, I'm too scatter-brained today to think of a really good name! I'm sorry, hope what I wrote at least sparks a couple ideas in your head, and watch The Dark Crystal anyways, even if you've seen it before, it's one of those really weird, cool movies that's always good fun to check out. :P

I have The Dark Crystal on DVD, but haven't watched it in years. You're right, it is a good reference I hadn't thought of. You should do an image search for "Brian Froud", whom I believe helped work on both Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal, and has published several books of art with fairies and creatures in the Dark Crystal style.

I do like the idea of coming up with a name that's easy to say/remember, based on some pre-existing words. Something like Bogrids, Aboggals... hm...

Boggart would be kind of good if I had to choose from the pre existing list.

As for own suggestions, I would fo with the irish folklore of the Puca (or Pooka). They are kind of shapeshifters with various forms, either beautifil or monstrous and can be both mal- and benevolent. Kinda fits your description, but the name might sound too exotic/less intimidating for your purposes.

EDIT: Spriggans are more thieves right?

EDIT: Spriggans are more thieves right?

I hadn't caught that exactly, but here's what Wikipedia says:

"Spriggans were depicted as grotesquely ugly, and were said to be found at old ruins and
barrows guarding buried treasure and generally acting as fairy bodyguards. They were also said to be busy thieves. Though usually small, they had the ability to swell to enormous size (they were sometimes speculated to be the ghosts of the old giants). Certainly their disposition was poor, and they caused mischief to those who offended them. They sent storms to blight crops, and sometimes stole away mortal children, leaving their ugly changelings in their place."

I like the shape-shifting idea, and that they live around ruins and barrows.

I might currently be leaning toward Gorgons though :/ I like the sound of the name a lot, but it is fairly specific, mythologically speaking (though also fairly fitting with the human/animal hybridization).

Hm, would make Spriggan a good choice lore relating.

Gonna be honest here: Gorgon will pretty much remind people of either snake heads or petrification. Greek mythology is common knowledge, so this is going to be a headscratcher if neither is a defining trait of the race.

But hey, I trust your artistic vision and ability to convey another message with that name.

Gorgon is definitely getting there, I just feel like it's too familiar to Greek mythology, maybe an offshoot of the word with a similar sound or pronunciation? Going off of my previous suggestion, try to give it that Dark Crystal touch! Create a catchy, memorable name of your own! XD

I was going to suggest Spriggans as well but for the same reason Doom brought it up I left it out of my post. Gorgons are cool too though, as you point out, carry some mythological baggage around with them.

A race of humanoid beings that have taken on aspects of other lifeforms that have decomposed in their swamps.

As a German this puts Doppelgänger or Wiedergänger (which is even more fitting) into my mind.

To mutate a word..  Sprogs or Sproggans.  (Bog + spriggans.)

I don't really like Gorgon because the the aformentioned mythological baggage.  Honestly, I don't really like any of the existing mythological names for that reason.

If you're looking in that direction though, I'd say Bogle or Bogill since they are so generic that it could be anything.

After reading thorugh the posts again:

Not to play smartass here (seriously, please don't hit me!), but if you're going to give the yet to be named mutant race names from other myths it really clashes too much with term Gorgon.

On one side you're trying to evoke something associated with myth (harpy for example is pretty much universally applied for human/bird hybirds), on the other side you use another iconic name totally out of context.

A Harpy of the race of Gorgons? nah.

Wow, lots of awesome and interesting info here!  Love all this.  As far as the list goes I would choose Boggart.  I actually almost made my enemy/item rewards having to do with Boggarts. xP  And for an idea I think Grindylow would be a nice idea.  They are known to live in bogs, swamps, and lakes and have a mix of humanoid and monstrous characteristics.
