Language of the Drop- Concepts
« on: July 03, 2014, 02:02:35 PM »
So lately there has been some discussion on the Language of Delvers Drop. Luckily I worked with a friend a long time ago on coming up with a language for a school project. The goal with any new language is flow much like a piece of artwork. It needs to utilize symbols as well as a combination of sounds. To make this easy to understand we translate it with English to help in pronunciation and visual confirmation.

The original Language that my friend Logan and I created used a combination of languages based on our research into Verdurian, and Sindarin. We appreciated the design of the script and wanted to incorporate the flow of Arabic characters into it.

With this we developed some symbols for the alphabet and word to word translation. However we stopped before we were able to develop a way to construct sentences, so for now we use a English structure for simplicity.

I'll be posting for information on it soon so hopefully this will help in creating a language. As soon as I find out more information on the language being developed I will post it here as well. But lets get some ideas and discussion flowing and help out with the concept!

Example from the Massie Language that we developed:

"Na-ee" -Translation Hi

"Ni-ew" -Translation Bye

"Sue" - Translation Here

"Malyo" -Translation Candy

"Sefim" -Translation Guess

"Est" -Translation Destroy

"Yist" -Translation Minute

"Delss" -Translation Game

"Balmun" -Translation Noble

These are just a few of the 100-300 word translations we have. I'll try to upload the alphabet symbols soon.

Above is a link to the alphabet concept page. The page shows the symbols associated with letters and combinations. Still a work in progress.

Discussion of Style:

With any language it is important to note the area in which it comes from. Certain styles may bring about an appearance of barbaric origin or elegance of what we would consider a more civilized society.

By using symbols to represent sound or "letters" we can also create that illusion. For example if I were to use very sharp perfect angles, very geometric shapes and structure the language in a way in which it reads top to bottom then it could very well be a futuristic, alien, or even a intelligent robot language. Whereas a curvy style with a flow in the right direction may imply a language of high class, intelligence, and tends to be used in fantasy worlds.

So I think what would be good for Delvers Drop would be a combination language. Perhaps using styles that show flow to capture an ancient intelligent form mixed with hieroglyphs and sandscript characters. I think this would also go with the tone of the game and have just enough edge to seem legit.

I will try to explore that with the next revision of the previous alphabet I posted. So stay tuned!
