EA Shuts Down Maxis
« on: March 04, 2015, 04:09:58 PM »
Apparently EA is pulling the plug on Maxis, maker of Simcity, and combining parts of the studios with other elements within EA. Not surprising with how they handled the latest game but still sad to see a long time game studio get cannibalized and shut down.

Wow, that's kind of sad. On the other hand, I guess I thought they had already been absorbed a while back o_0

I remember that Maxis logo from back in the 90's, when I was playing Sim City 2000 at my cousin's house. My favorite memory is trying to run a bridge out to an island, and then connect it to another part of the mainland... but something with the island's slopes made it really hard to get the roads to go in the right direction... and in frustration we ended up with an island entirely covered by roads... which we dubbed Road Island. Pun intended, though it was much funnier when I was 13.

This definitely is EA closing them for good, because otherwise they wouldn't announce this. It's widely known that EA eats up studios and then uses their names as cheap advertisement for gaming quality (Bioware or DICE are the best examples), despite the original dev team usually being long gone.

Can't even blame Maxis that much, because I doubt any developer would have thought that permanent online for what is a well established singleplay would ever work. I hope the team can find a place to continue it's previously great work.

Road Island.

The majority were either shuttered away or shuttered off some time ago and the rest quit; I don't think any of the classic Maxis employees worked on the newest Sim City to any large extent.

EA is the company you work for to get enough experience to get out and go somewhere else where you're valued and not overworked & underpaid.
